The Ensemble

The Theseus Ensemble is dedicated exclusively to the performance of modern music of recent decades, focusing on works by established composers.

The ensemble's programming reflects its conviction that the rich complexity of this music is its most compelling and attractive quality, and that it demands to be treated as a classic repertoire. Inspired by Theseus’ exploration of the Labyrinth, we imagine each new piece as a mysterious region, with the composer a trusted guide. Through welcoming and enthusiastic presentation, we hope to draw more listeners in to the magical and captivating world of modern music.

The Conductor

The founder and conductor of the Theseus Ensemble is Geoffrey Paterson, winner of the 2009 Leeds Conductors Competition. Composition studies with Alexander Goehr and conducting masterclasses with Peter Eötvös and Pierre Boulez have brought him into contact with some of the seminal figures of modern music, and since conducting Birtwistle’s Secret Theatre at the age of eighteen he has established a reputation as an exceptionally fluent and technically gifted interpreter of the most complex scores.

The Players

The ensemble is comprised of some of the UK’s leading young professional instrumentalists, many of whom work regularly with the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Sinfonietta, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
